"Trying to get this hat to stay on Gobshite," said Onji, as the dog wriggled and drooled all over her arms.

"Nobody's going to understand why he's our mascot if he's not wearing a pentapode hat," added An-qi.

"Remind me again," said Cheryl, "why you guys don't have an actual pentapode mascot?"

"They tried," said Leon, entering and tossing his newspaper onto an empty bench. "They skipped practice three days in a row in an ill-advised attempt to find one in the sewers."

"And we found Gobshite instead," said Si Jia, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. "Sorry, coach. Look--the hat's not going to stay on him this match, why don't we just go on without him?"

"And force Leon to deal with press questions about not having a mascot?" demanded An-qi in mock outrage.

"We do have a blurb for the announcer anyway," Onji said thoughtfully. "Better luck next time?"

"I just hope," said An-qi, "they don't think...we've gone to the dogs."
